I hear all the time that “money cannot buy happiness”. I also hear “money is the root of all evil.”
I’ve been broke for quite a while, and I gotta say that this is a load of crap.
This is what it’s like to be broke: you eat crappy food because you can’t afford anything good. You stay inside your house, because the moment you leave, you have to spend money on things. You can’t even get in your car, because that burns gas money. You can’t eat out at a nice restaurant. You can’t go see a movie. You can’t join a festival. You’re trapped… imprisoned in your own house.
Money doesn’t buy happiness? No, but what money does buy is freedom, and you cannot be happy without freedom! I don’t need to be super rich or anything… I just want to live comfortably. I just want to be able to see live theater, concerts, movies… I want to eat good food. I want to go to neat places. I want to join friends for lunch.
But I don’t want too much money… and this is where greed comes into play. To me, making your life’s goal around earning as much money as possible is no different than hoarding useless crap in your house. If you’ll never use it, or never enjoy it, what’s the point? Would you go buy food that you’d never eat? Would you buy books that you’d never read?
Everything about greed is just plain stupid. If you’re going to just keep getting more money and more power, then your life is empty. You’ll never reach the end, and you’ll never be happy. Try spending some of that money. Enjoy your life for once. C’mon… you’ve earned it.
