I thought I’d mix it up a bit here with technology and throw in some gamer tips. Chances are, if you’re into technology, you most likely play video games as well. I don’t plan on having a gamer blog, because I’m a casual gamer and have no idea what I’m doing… so I’ll leave it here inside the technobabble, since video games are familiar to the realm of technology (hell, video games are the driving force behind technological change in today’s industry).
I’ve played my fair share of MMORPG’s, starting with Final Fantasy XI and World of Warcraft all the way to forgotten titles like Age of Conan and Tabula Rasa. I’ve recently discovered the best approach to playing these games and getting decent levels without feeling like you’re underpowered.
All of these games will send you on a quest to someplace, and there’s bound to be baddies there who are all too happy to eat you alive. From the many games I’ve played, I always made the same dumb mistake, and I always wound up getting killed. A lot…
After playing Dungeons and Dragons for a bit, I have a more well-rounded sense of roleplay, and how to approach quests in that game. In the modern WoW-clone MMO, you walk into a town, grab every quest you see, then begin planning your route to completing whatever task you were given. In the early levels, this is forgivable, since you’re not going to be there long anyway. But later on, you find that you’ve bitten off more than you can chew… then you find what you don’t chew is alive and actually eating you. Wow, where am I going with this metaphor…
I picked up Lord of the Rings Online (lotro) again, and decided to try a whole new approach to it. I call it: one at a time.
Ok, I need a better title… leave a better one in the comments.
I decided to roll a burglar character this go-round, since I’m all pumped up on the thief classes ever since watching OZ: The Great and Powerful. Something about being sneaky and finding creative practical solutions to problems really interests me.
Anyone who’s played a thief-like class knows immediately what’s about to happen: you gon’ get smacked! Thieves don’t have very good protective armor, nor do they have a lot of health. They get “Medium” armor, which is in limbo and a horrible place to be for armor. Not strong enough to be protective, and not stylish enough to make you look good. It’s the armor that’s always forgotten. Not to mention, lotro’s first set of crafted medium armor makes you look like a spaz who just decided to run outside in his sleeper pajamas and save the world
